Dental Examinations
Keeping your horse comfortable and performing at their best starts with a healthy mouth. At Perth Equine Vets, we believe in routine preventative dental care — regular check-ups help prevent painful problems before they start.

🦷 Routine care for happy, healthy horses
Every horse should have a dental examination every 6–12 months, depending on age, workload, and history. We recommend starting checking a youngster’s mouth from around 18 months of age. Regular visits mean we can spot small changes early and keep your horse eating, performing, and feeling their best all year round.
💡 Included in our Health Plan
One dental examination and treatment (including sedation) is included in our Equine Health Plan, helping you stay on top of routine care with no unexpected costs. Members also receive 10% off any additional dental treatments within the same year too. The health plan is therefore a great option for younger, older or horses with known dental problems as means you save even more on their dental care.

💉 Why we use sedation
Most horses need light sedation for a thorough dental examination. This allows us to safely and calmly assess every tooth, ensuring nothing is missed and your horse remains relaxed and comfortable throughout. It also allows their mouths to open much wider, which allows those hard to reach sharp points to be reduced much more easily.

🔍 More than just a quick rasp
A veterinary dental examination with Perth Equine Vets is a complete service that includes:
• Sedation (included as standard)
• A thorough examination of every tooth and soft tissue
• Identification and treatment of sharp enamel points, diastemata (gaps), fractured or loose teeth, overgrowths, and wolf teeth if required
• Dental chart and follow up recommendations
Our approach means your horse receives a full, professional dental service – not just a quick tidy-up. We will also happily show you the mouth before and after treatment, and explain what we are seeing to interested owners.
