Emergency & Out of Hours Care

Emergencies are always stressful – but we are here to help with our friendly and reassuring horsey team.

Perth Equine Vets provides 24/7 out of hours emergency cover for all registered clientswithin approximately 45 minutes of PH1 3FX. Due to the need to prioritise existing clients for emergency provision, we’re unfortunately unable to offer cover beyond this area.

If you have an emergency, please call 01738 259 427 and press option 9.

If your call is not answered immediately, please listen carefully to the voicemail options — it is likely that our vet is attending another emergency. Please call again in a few minutes. Please do not phone vets directly on individual mobile numbers.

If you are unsure whether your horse requires emergency treatment, please call for advice. It’s always better to check.

Common emergencies include:

• Colic

• Wounds and lacerations

• Foaling complications

Frequently Asked Questions

What area do you cover for emergencies?

We provide emergency veterinary cover within roughly 45 minutes’ drive of PH1 3FX. If you’re unsure whether your yard is within this area, please get in touch and we can confirm. Our request to register page contains a handy interactive map showing our catchment area.

Do I need to be registered for out of hours cover?

Yes. Our emergency service is available only to registered clients. This ensures we can provide prompt, reliable care when it’s needed most. If you find yourself without a registered vet at the time of an emergency, please do call us and we will do our best to help. Please note that for unregistered clients, £200 will be asked for upfront prior to the vet attending, and if applicable, the full remaining payment being settled at the time of the vet’s visit.

What should I do if I think my horse has colic?

Remove your horse’s feed, keep them in a safe, quiet area, and call us immediately on 01738 259 427. Do not attempt to walk or medicate your horse unless advised by a vet.

Can I send photos or videos?

Yes, sending a short video or photo via email: info@perthequinevets.com can help our vets quickly assess the situation, and make sure the correct equipment is brought before arriving. Please always phone first to make the vet aware as emails are not monitored out of hours. Please do not send to individual vets unless you have been advised to do so.

What should I do while waiting for the vet?

Keep your horse calm and safe, and avoid unnecessary handling. If possible, have a light source ready for night visits and ensure easy access for our vet and vehicle. A what 3 words location is also very handy too.

I don’t think my horse needs a visit, can I still access advice?

Of course! We would rather you asked advice as this will likely improve outcomes. A telephone consultation fee will apply if medication is dispensed, and an out of hours dispensing fee will also apply for medication pick up out with working hours.

What are your opening hours?

We are open Monday – Friday 0830-1700. We are closed bank holidays. Details of our festive opening hours can be accessed via social media or dialling the office number and listening to the recorded message.
